“Have you ever killed a man, fella?” “$5,000 to kill a man.”

“I want you to kill me!” “Just do a little target practice.”

Lines from LADY FROM SHANGHAI by my hero Orson Welles.

Ponder Existence

Friday, December 26th, 2003

It’s the day after. I cooked the Italian Christmas Eve feast with thirteen types of seafood–the twelve Apostles and Jesus. There were 4 big courses and it took about 6 hours to eat. The three 4 lb. lobsters, mesquite smoked over a bed of large scallions, were a big hit. My family and guests were amazed that you didn’t need butter or lemon. BikerCHEF was alive and well. We kept the spirit of Santa Claus alive on Christmas morn for my son. Then, I needed to be alone. I got in the car late Christmas Day Evening. I traveled to Burbank. I needed a particular kind of couch. Something nostalgic. I found it. I had a scotch, then quietly pondered my existence.

May the Lessons of Christmas stay alive for all.

Wet, cold Hollywood Blvd.

“I don’t know you, but I’d like to give you a Christmas gift”. She was scared at first.

I was persitant. “This really is a gift for you, nothing more”.

In the end, we both felt really good about it. Happy Holidays.

FRESH START FOR BikerCHEF

Saturday, December 20th, 2003

The last thing we wanted was for me to be a talking head in front of the camera pointing out new spices, interesting locations and hot bikes. That’s where it was definitely headed on the Discovery Travel Channel. We’re going back to the original, more mystical concept of the show just like what is descibed on our web page. The adventure is going to create the dish. We’re going to shoot our own pilot in house. It’s in development already. Live long, Ride Hard, Eat well.

ONE SOLITARY LIFE

He was born in an obscure village. He worked in a carpenter’s shop until He was thirty and for those years He was an itinerant preacher. He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never owned a home. He never had a family. He never went to college. He never traveled 200 miles from the place where He was born. He never did one of the things that accompany man’s idea of greatness. He had no credentials but Himself. While still a young man, the tide of popular opinion turned against Him. His friends ran away. Some of them denied Him. He was turned over to His enemies. He went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed to a cross between two thieves. While He was dying, His executioners gambled for the only piece of property he had on earth — His coat. When He was dead, He was taken down and laid in a borrowed grave. Nineteen centuries have come and gone and today He is the central figure of the human race. All the armies that ever marched, and all the navies that were ever built, and all the parliaments that ever sat, and all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have never affected the life of man upon earth as powerfully as has that one solitary life. (St. Anon)

Elyse Meredith arrives in proper Dickens attire.

Everyone had a blast before we screened the 1951 “A Christmas Carol” with Alastair Sim.

Ken and Nick Paine. Father & Son duo. Mr. Paine makes the best damn eggnog I’ve ever had.

He uses the right kind of rum.

My favorite cinema. The Silent Movie Theatre.
